Researchers - Arya Madhavan

A trained Kudiyattam performer for 8 years, Arya Madhavan has been doing her Doctoral Research on actor training of Kudiyattam in the Department of Theatre Film and Television Studies, University of Wales, Aberystwyth from 2002. She had her training with Guru Margi Sathi, a pioneer of women roles in Kudiyattam and a leading Kudiyattam exponent. Kudiyattam, which uses Sanskrit dramas for its performances, is the oldest of the existing theatre forms in India, performed in Kerala, and different from popular Indian dances such as Bharatanatyam and Kathak. It is about 2000 years old and was being continuously performed ever since till this period.

Arya has conducted several Kudiyattam and acting workshops and lecture demonstrations both within India and UK, which included two months long Kudiyattam workshop conducted in Aberystwyth Arts Centre with the funding from Arts Council Wales and the workshops for Centre for Performance Research, Aberystwyth. She is now involved with developing an actor training project, 'The Breath Project' along with her collaborator Mr. Sreenath Nair.
