Project 5 - Transformation in African Music and Dance Performance

This project will begin in September 2003. Two detailed case studies will be conducted which will examine contemporary performance in relation to changing criteria and modes of performance and production in Britain and in their home environments. One case study will focus on the dance and music of Ghana - especially that of the Ewe people. The other will centre on the Bata dances of Nigeria.

Project 7 - New Directions In South Asian Dance: Postcolonial Identity Construction

This project explores concepts of tradition and change within South Asian Dance practices of the present. The project links such inquiries into form with broader concerns of postcolonial identity formation. The project relies upon the expertise of British-based and international South Asian artists in residence, domestic and international research fellows, as well as the projects primary researchers. The project investigates such concerns through practice-based inquiries such as choreographic research and development, performances, and workshops as well as through more traditional scholarly formats.
