Margrave Mystoricals, Madrigals and Music
Presented by Goldensford Publishers
Guildhall, 7.30pm
£15 full/senior citizens, £12 concessions (wine/soft drinks included)
Margrave Mystoricals, Madrigals and Music will be a feast of readings and music that has either inspired the writing or gives a flavour of the books of local author Jay Margrave. Jay has so far written three historical mystery novels – mystoricals – which all have scenes where music plays an important part. So, with the aid of the Erato Consort singers and the Minstrels Gallery players, scenes from Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan periods will be brought to musical life.

In 2008 the choir surveyed English cathedral music in a programme called Heaven Restored. The enthusiastic audience response to the Victorian music in that programme has encouraged them to explore that repertoire further. Stanford (For lo, I raise up) and Elgar (Great is the Lord) set their texts with imagination, passion and great craftsmanship. Basil Harwood’s O how glorious exploits the power of sweeping melody and dramatic contrasts and Stainer (I saw the lord) divides the choir into eight parts to achieve powerful climaxes. His famous setting of God so loved the world has more in common with the restrained intensity of Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548-1611) whose quatercentenary they continue to commemorate. His Vere languores has long been famed as one of those “special” pieces and the rhythmic sparkle of Lauda Sion may even set feet tapping.
