Kerb-side Collection Scheme Evaluation and Performance Indicators
This project with Waverley Borough Council is examining the bets options for optimising the effectivesness of a borough wide kerb-side collection scheme for household recyclables. The borough has recently introduced a scheme to all households and is keen to increase its effectiveness so that it can have greater impact on improving the borough’s recycling rate. The council is a waste collection authority (WCA) committed to tripling its 2001/2002 recycling rate of 12% to 36% by 2005/2006.
This project will evaluate the current scheme offered by Waverley and examine how it could be enhanced to achieve 36% of household waste recycled. This will involve gaining a better understanding of the factors that affect public participation in recycling schemes such as public attitude, location and socio-economic differences. The type of materials that enter the waste stream both now and in the future will also be examined as will how the changing demographic profile can influence this.
