How to delete a printer AND its associated printer port

Due to some problems with the LJ5000 printer in the photocopy room of BC03 the settings for the printer have changed.

You can change the settings manually but it is generally easier to delete the printer and its port and install the printer again using its new settings.

The following is a guide for XP users (2000 users will find it very similar) on how to delete the LJ5000 but also apply to any network printer.

If you are using Windows 98/ME then this will not help very much and I suggest you contact your SCHOOL IT support for advice on how to do this.

Go to your printers folder (Start menu / Setting / Printers) and select the printer to delete.

Right mouse click the printer and select "Delete"

You need to do this step before you can delete the port - see below!
Confirm that you want to delete the printer.
Now to delete the port :

In the printer list, go to the "File" menu and select "Server Properties"
Click the "Ports" tab

Select the port that the deleted printer was using - in this case it it port "IP_131.227.182.117"

Click the "Delete Port" button

If you can't delete the port check that the "Printer" field (see the Printer column in the image) is empty for that port. If not then you need to do the previous step properly.

The port will be deleted and you can click "Close" to continue.

If you followed this due to changes to the BC03 printer (LJ5000) then go ahead and install the printer again using the instructions on the previous page.
