How to start Formian

If you are under windows, and the icon is on your screen, double click on it.


If you installing the software for the first time. Go to windows explorer,

create a new folder, unzip the file form.zip and double click on the file formian.exe.

Don't forget to keep the dll files in the same folder as the formian.exe file.

The graphical interface

 

The picture below shows the interface. A nodepad where the formulation are written is situated on the left side of the screen.

The right side of the screen is the drawing pad that display the graphics.

The picture below shows the detail of the menu.

The red 'E' execute the formulations

<> separates different formulations

.

(*) is used for comment.

C clear the drawingpad

.

D draw a variable highlighted with the cursor

.

F (not implemented yet)

.

G gives the coordinates of the variable highlighted with the cursor

A basic formulation

This is a very simple tutotrial to get used to the syntax:

1. Start formian

2. Copy the text written below: (Don't forget the semicolon)

<>(*)Comment(*)

Clear;

a={[0,0,0;0,1,0]};

use vm(2);

draw a;

<>

 

3. Click on the red E button to execute the formulation

The picture below shows the graphical output

Explaination of the input:

" clear; " clears any formulation previously drawn in the drawing pad

"a={[0,0,0;0,1,0]};" gives the coordinate of a formex.

"use vm(2); " is used to scale the drawing

"draw a;" draw the variable a

Export DXF, WMF and other formats

Configurations generated by formian can be exported in many different formats

.

To export click on "transfer" in the menu.

Choose reformat Formex File

.

The picture below shows that the user has chosen to export the variable struct in DXF.

The file will be saved in the folder D:\olivier\formian.

Export for a structural analysis program

The configuration generated by Formian can also be exported to a structural analysis package.

To export click on transfer in the menu.

Choose Submission Form >> new

 

The picture below shows that the user has chosen to export his configuration to Lusas.

Function's library

In order to help you to use formian some of most common functions are listed below:

Cardinal functions

Tran(d,t) (translation)

d is the direction of translation and t is the amount of translation.

Rin(d,n.p) (rindle)

D is the direction of replication, n is the number of replication and p is the amount of translation at each step.

Ref(d,r) (reflection)

d is the direction of reflection and r is the position of the plane of reflection.
