Academic History: -

Maarten is a research fellow with the Mechatronic Systems and Robotics Research Group, in the School of Mechanical & Materials
Engineering at the University of Surrey, UK. In 1998 he graduated from the University of Twente in the Netherlands with a degree in Applied Physics.

He spent the first 4 months of work with the MSSR group working on writting LabView programs for the "CAST" (Control via Advanced Simulation Technology) project sponsored by Teaching and Learning Innovations Group and dept. of Mechanical Engineering both of the university of Surrey.

AT the moment he works on a project titled: "ROAD SURFACE DEBRIS CLASSIFICATION AND INTELLIGENT SWEEPING CONTROL FOR A SEMI-AUTONOMOUS SWEEPING VEHICLE" or for short The Johnston project.

The main aim of the project is to provide the next generation of environmentally sensitive semi-autonomous cleaning vehicles with the capability of effective automatic debris sweeping. This will require a fundamental understanding of brush technology and how sweeping and debris collection is achieved.
A further aim is to enhance the cleaning performance by two distinct sensing and control approaches. Firstly, by making the brush mechanism responsive to local road conditions close to the brushes. Secondly, by making the system responsive to predetermined debris position and classification data from a sensor at the front of the vehicle.
