Technical requirements
The LLM in Employment Law is a blended learning programme. It comprises on-line delivery, supplemented with hard-copy texts and face-to-face sessions in residential weekends. As such a large element of the programme is web-based, the on-line materials may be accessed from any computer with Internet access and a supported Web browser.
The software package that is used to deliver the LLM programme's on-line materials is called ULearn within the University and is otherwise known as WebCT Vista (version 3). The software is a sophisticated virtual learning environment (VLE) which allows you to upload coursework assignments, take assessments, take part in discussions, etc. Therefore, due to this interactive nature, the VLE has certain technical requirements, principally making use of the Java software plug-in and you should check thoroughly before proceeding to sign up for the programme that your computer is capable of running this software by using the links elsewhere on this page.
Generally, you will need to have;
- an up to date web browser (including relevant service packs for your computer's operating system), and
- that it has the correct version of the Java software plug-in as required by ULearn at that time.
The University has provided a specific ULearn User Support set of web pages for this purpose available at: http://portal.surrey.ac.uk/ulearn and by selecting the 'User Support For ULearn' section. Specifically you will want to look at the 'Configuring your Internet Browser' pages at http://portal.surrey.ac.uk/ulearn/support/browser.
You can also quickly check whether the browser you have installed is suitable by visiting the WebCT Browser Tune-Up page at http://www.webct.com/tuneup/
There are also ULearn help pages for Law students available.
