Postgraduate Research Studentships

This is an exciting time for Law at the University of Surrey and we are pleased to be able to offer these new opportunities which offer an excellent chance to contribute to the continued success and development of the School of Law. For the academic year 2007/2008, the School of Law will be offering 2 postgraduate research studentships in Law. Both studentships will commence on 1 October 2007 and will include funding for three years to cover fees for PhD registration (at home/EU rate) and a stipend of £8,000 per annum. Awards will be made for one year in the first instance, renewable for a further two years (subject to satisfactory progress). Successful candidates will be expected to undertake teaching support activity of up to six hours teaching per week.

Applicants should normally have, or be expected to obtain, a 2:1 degree or above in Law or a related discipline. A postgraduate qualification (LLM or equivalent) would be desirable.

The closing date for applications is: Friday 18 May 2007

1. General Research Studentship

Applications will be considered in any field of Law in which the School is able to provide appropriate supervision, but applicants with an interest in European Law, International Law, Environmental or Environmental Health Law, Public Law, or Jurisprudence would be particularly welcome. The specific research interests of Law School staff may be accessed at: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/law/staff.htm

2. Democracy and Accountability Studentship

The Democracy and Accountability studentship will be specifically allocated to projects examining decision making and accountability in public authorities, inclusive structures and new models of local government and service provision. It is envisaged that this project will take account of the Government's ‘Neighbourhoods Agenda' and the broader context of urban regeneration.

In order to apply to apply for either studentship you will need to complete and return, in hard copy, a University application form which can be downloaded from http://www.surrey.ac.uk/postgraduate/information/applications.htm. In addition you will need to provide transcripts, a detailed CV listing all your academic and professional qualifications and experience, an outline research proposal (2-3 pages) and a covering letter detailing your interest and suitability for the studentship.
