SURREY PROFESSOR JOINS THE CREAM OF ENGINEERING

Professor Michael Kelly, Head of the School of Electronics, Computing and Mathematicsat the University of Surrey, has received the distinguished honour of election to Fellowship of The Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK's leading engineering society.

He is one of 45 eminent engineers, from all over the UK, confirmed as new Fellows at The Academy's AGM in London last night (15 July). Altogether 12 Fellowships were awarded to senior academics.

The Guildford professor, aged 49, was elected for being both an outstanding engineer and a first class scientist in the area of quantum semiconductor devices, illustrated by his book on "Low Dimensional Semiconductors" and his 13 patents. The current emphasis of his research is low cost manufacturability.

Besides being highly regarded for his distinguished contributions as Head of School, Professor Kelly is also honoured for his contributions to Engineering and Industry through active Foresight panel membership.

On being asked how he felt about joining the cream of engineering, Professor Kelly replied, "I'm most pleased to be joining my five colleagues at Surrey who are already Fellows. This emphasises our real strength in engineering".

New Zealand born Professor Kelly came to the UK in 1971 to do a PhD at Cambridge. He stayed there for a decade carrying out research before moving on to join the GEC Hirst Research Centre. He became Professor of Physics and Electronics at the University of Surrey in 1992.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the Royal Society. In becoming a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Professor Kelly will be adding to the enormous wealth of engineering knowledge and experience that The Academy's one thousand Fellows possess.

The Academy exists to pursue, encourage and maintain excellence in the whole field of engineering to promote the advancement of the science, art and practice of engineering for the benefit of the public.

Notes for editors:

Two other engineers, linked to the University of Surrey, were also confirmed as Fellows. These include Professor Alastair Walker, former Pro Vice-Chancellor and one time Head of Mechanical Engineering who retired from Surrey in 1996 and Tao Soon Cham, a University of Surrey honorary graduate, and Founder and President of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore which has close connections with Surrey.
