University of Surrey hosts first international Tourism and Hospitality Conference of the new millennium (11-14 January 2000)

The Rt. Hon Virginia Bottomley MP yesterday opened an important international conference, 'Tourism and Hospitality in the 21st Century', which is being held at the University of Surrey, Guildford. Delegates included many of the world's significant figures from the fields of tourism and hospitality.

In her address to the 150 delegates, Mrs Bottomley discussed her long held interest in the tourism industry. She remarked that when she was Secretary of State at the Department of Heritage she focused on and publicised the valuable contribution of Tourism and Hospitality to the UK economy. Mrs Bottomley commented; "It's an industry of profound importance as a wealth creator and in the creation of 1.7million jobs in Britain." Now as Vice Chairman of the All Party Tourism Group she is continuing to act as a megaphone for the industry. Mrs Bottomley's key message to the conference was to work together to ensure the Tourism and Hospitality industry achieved the recognition and respect it deserves.

The Rt. Hon Chris Smith MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport will be addressing the Conference Dinner on Thursday 13th January, and will put the government's viewpoint on the development of tourism. The Dinner will also be attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Guildford.

The conference has been organised by the School of Management Studies for the Service Sector at the University and aims to explore and discuss the future of Tourism and Hospitality.

The main topics and discussions will include: providing a forum for examining the longer term future of tourism and hospitality; developing and sharing new concepts and ideas; and fostering interaction in the study and practice of tourism and hospitality between the private and public sectors; and the increasing role of academia to develop the study of Tourism and Hospitality and innovative approaches to keep the industry competitive.

The conference is sponsored by several local as well as international organisations: Butterworth Heinemann publishers, Guildford Borough Council, Sun International Hotels, Surrey County Council, Swallow Hotels and TRI Hospitality Consulting.

A full conference programme is available if you would like to attend any of the sessions.
