A well-designed and very practical postgraduate programme, the MA in Translation at the University of Surrey enabled me to acquire competence in the practice of translation and enter the marketplace as a qualified professional translator. When I first came to study for the MA in Translation at UniS, my idea of the translation process as a whole was rather vague. During this year, this vague idea changed into a very clear understanding of the mechanisms of translation. Translation theory and practice are nicely combined. I really enjoyed the weekly translation workshops, where I was getting constant feedback from my teachers and I could see myself making significant improvement. From my personal experience and my attempt to get in the translation business, I have realised that the MA in Translation is a highly recognised qualification in the translation industry. It is a definite plus in an academic profile and a distinct advantage for any potential employer.

The MA in Translation at the University of Surrey was a great experience. The staff are there for you should you have any problems. The translation lectures are taught by people who have first-hand experience in the field and so they are able to give an insight into the working life of a translator. The other lectures are also interesting and useful. Translation Theory, for example, gives an interesting insight into the history of translation and what solutions there may be for particular translation problems. Then there are lectures to help you understand the technical, legal and economic background of a text, simplifying the actual translation process. If you don't want to specialise in all three translation fields, you can choose to do Greek or Norwegian for beginners, studied from a translation point of view. And the 'Languages for All' option at the University also allows you to learn new languages beside your MA which can be great fun. But it's not just the course and the lecturers that make the MA a great experience. Guildford itself is a charming town with plenty of places to eat and go out at night.

I have always wanted to be a translator. After having completed the MA in Translation course at the University of Surrey I finally feel qualified enough to start working in the translation industry. The MA course provided us with a variety of modules dealing with different aspects of translation, such as terminology and project management, and we have also been given training in the use of translation software. Because of the variety of subjects taught, I now feel there are more job opportunities available for me within the industry. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to work with translation.
